Celebrating World Poetry Day & Nowruz Festival with Uyghur poetry

. The “International Day of Nowruz” was proclaimed in 2010 by the United Nations General Assembly. The festival of Nowruz unites the individuals and peoples of the 12 countries that together nominated the festival for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to celebrate values of sharing and harmony.

. World Poetry Day is celebrated on 21 March, and was declared by UNESCO in 1999, “with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard”.

At a time of crisis for Uyghur language and culture, in the midest of China’s genocide policies towards the Uyghurs with cultural erasure in the Uyghur homeland, we celeberate the “International Day of Nowruz” and “International World Poetry Day” by inviting well know Uyghur poets around the world and will discuss how best to sustain Uyghur language, literature and culture in the diaspora.

With China’s ongoing policies of genocide towards the Uyghur people over the last four years, the survival of Uyghur literature, language, and culture has reached a critical point.

In the face of cultural erasure in the Uyghur homeland, we celebrate the “International Day of Nowruz” and “International World Poetry Day” on 21st March 2021 by gathering well-known Uyghur poets from around the world to read their poems, and to discuss Uyghur poetry, literature and language, and how to keep them alive in the diaspora community.

Nowruz, the first day of spring, is the beginning of a new year for Uyghurs. Celebrated each year on 21st March, the Nowruz festival is a popular festival among Turkic and Persian peoples. Uyghurs celebrate Nowruz by gathering together, making Nowruz dishes, playing traditional games such as horse and camel races, tug of war, or wheel spinning, and by writing poems to celebrate the changing seasons.

Reading poetry (Mushaira) is an important part of the Nowruz celebration for Uyghurs, a chance to voice the innermost thoughts, feelings and desires of the Uyghur people. Sadly, neither Nowruz nor Uyghur poetry can be freely celebrate in the Uyghur Homeland today.
